Ben Kosiba felt a knot of desperation in his stomach. He never expected the Romans to resist this long. And while the ultimate outcome for the Roman camp remained certain, the cost already had gone far beyond anything he’d thought possible. In truth, he’d half-expected the Romans to capitulate when the rising sun revealed the overwhelmingly superior strength of the Jewish army. He had badly underestimated the Roman commander, and now the number of Jewish casualties alone, regardless of final victory, would likely be his undoing. Maybe Eleazar was right that another victory such as this would finish the rebellion. He thought about his rise to power and wondered what he would do different if given the chance. He was yet unwilling to admit it may have been a mistake to try and fight the Romans using Roman-style methods. He reluctantly realized Eleazar and the others might have been right after all. Perhaps all he had accomplished with the latest strategy was to ensure a bloody and faster Jewish defeat.
